      Boron Carbide

      Boron carbide is exceptionally hard – only diamond and cubic boron nitride materials are known to have a higher hardness. The material has high wear resistance, high compressive strength and low density and is usually produced by hot pressing or hot isostatic pressing techniques to achieve better sintering.

      Typical applications for boron carbide include ballistic protection, nozzles and nuclear applications where neutron absorption is required. In powder form boron carbide is ideal for uses such as lapping pastes.

      Characteristics of boron carbide include:

      • High thermal conductivity
      • High strength and stiffness
      • Available in a range of purities
      • Excellent resistance to strong acids and alkalis at elevated temperatures
